Більше того – витлумачити цей сон, його символи і рушійні сили в діалозі з засновником психоаналізу – Зиґмундом Фройдом. Революція, солідарність трудящих, етнічна і класова нетерпимість, масові рухи, колективна агресія, диктатура – режисер намагається знайти пояснення цим важливим для історії ХХ сторіччя явищам в психоаналітичній теорії. Не випадково роки кінохроніки обмежуються двома важливими датами – 1896 і 1939 роками і відображають події, сучасником яких був Зиґмунд Фройд. У 1896 році Фройд розпочав роботу над своїм першим фундаментальним текстом «Тлумачення сновидінь», де він винайшов поняття «несвідоме», а брати Люм’єри продемонстрували свій перший фільм і, як вважається, винайшли кіно. У вересні 1939 року Фройд помер у Лондоні, куди він переїхав з Відня після аншлюсу Австрії нацистською Німеччиною, цього ж місяця розпочалася Друга світова війна.
