Він терпить багато від пересічних людей, але коли терпіння Гогена закінчується, він не збирається продовжувати жити в цьому похмурому світі елітного Парижа. Поль кидає все, що у нього є, навіть дружину й дітей, і відправляється на інший кінець світу, щоб шукати нові пейзажі, нове натхнення. Доля приводить його на Таїті, де його приймає плем'я справжніх дикунів, які ніколи не бачили цивілізацію.
