ХVI століття. Ліфляндія. В одному з аристократичних будинків помирає старий лицар Рісбітер. Він заповів сину скриньку із сімейною реліквією. Духовні пастирі найближчого монастиря хочуть заволодіти скринькою, щоб примножити славу громади. Молодий спадкоємець згоден поступитися церкві реліквією, але за однієї умови: йому повинні віддати за дружину прекрасну Агнес, племінницю абатиси жіночого монастиря. А серце юної красуні належить волелюбному лицареві Габріелю...
