Dr. Allen Seward (Robert Francis) is assigned to a western cavalry post where his predecessors had been drunks and slackers. The post doesn't take kindly to him either, especially after he disregards regulations and tends to sick Indians on the malaria-infested reservation. The Indians break away from the reservation to move to a healthier higher ground, and when they join with the Comanches to besiege the fort, Seward is branded as a "woodhawk", the bird that turns against its own. Donna Reed is present as the niece of the post commander; Phil Carey is a cavalry captain that believes the only good Indian is a dead Indian, and May Wynn (who shared a screen debut with Francis in "The Caine Mutiny)is the white girl raised by the Indians and married to the chief's son. Francis would make only two more films before being killed in a 1955 plane crash.

As Clay Tindall (Bill Elliott as Wild Bill Elliott), comes to a town in a search for the killer of his brother and quickly becomes unpopular with the townspeople who are unwillingly but submissive subjects to the whims of local cattleman Quentin Allen (Carleton Young) and his motley gang of hired hands and henchies. During the Civil War, Border City is a town laying on the Missouri-Arkansas border at the base of the Ozark mountains.Despite its closeness to the North-South conflict, Border City professes its neutrality and fiercely imposes a 8 mile limit to any belligerent army.Young Sally Maris is arriving into Border City, from the East Coast, on the stagecoach, at the request of her brother who runs a saloon and hotel in town.Uppon approaching Border City, the stagecoach is stopped by a small Union Army patrol and passengers are checked out.The patrol commander offers to escort the stagecoach into town but on the way they are attacked by Quantrill's Raiders who kill the Union soldiers.The Raiders escort the stagecoach into town themselves.Among the Raiders are the James brothers, Charles Quantrill himself and Kate Quantrill, his wife.The town of Border City dislikes having these Raiders within the city limits and the mayor decides to send for the Union forces in order to rid Border City of the troublesome Quantrill's Raiders.The problem is the mayor of Border City owns the biggest lead mines in the region and both the Confederacy and the Union want to capture the mines so vital to the armament industry.

Sharon becomes convinced that the only way to foil the gang is to build a railroad to carry the ore, but that will take an extraordinary engineer in such mountainous territory. Sharon finds his man in brawling adventurer Jeff Kincaid, an experienced hand at difficult jobs and former resident of Carson City who knows the difficult terrain very well. It becomes a reunion of sorts as Kincaid's half brother works for the local newspaper, but they soon become rivals for the affections of Susan Mitchell, the publisher's daughter. Kincaid also has to fight the town's hostility to his boisterous railhands and ongoing efforts by the outlaws to sabotage the project.

Тільки що одружившись, Вілл і його прекрасна білявка-квакерша Емі збираються назавжди покинути містечко, маючи намір залишити у минулому небезпечну роботу і купити власне ранчо, щоб пустити корінь.Однак, у містечку довідаються, що лютий убивця Френк Міллер повинен дуже незабаром приїхати у Гедливіль і помститися Віллу й усьому місту за те, що вони засадили його у в'язницю кілька років тому назад. Брат Міллера і ще два бандити-стрілки вже чекають поїзд, на якому їде Міллер, а поїзд повинен прийти «рівно опівдні».
