Біографія
Едвард Дмитрик — американський кінорежисер українського походження, батько жанру «чорного фільму».
Народився у родині бідних українських емігрантів з села Буряківці на Тернопільщині.
Едварда Дмитрика вважають класиком світового кіна, одним з творців так званого стилю “фільм-нуар”.
Його ім’я стоїть поруч з такими метрами як Альфред Гічкок, Фріц Ланґ, Орсон Веллс, Біллі Вайлдер, Ніколас Рей і Стенлі Кубрик. Стрічки цього жанру наповнені атмосферою песимізму, розчарування, депресії та цинізму, що пе ... редавала гнітючі настрої американського суспільства періоду Другої світової та перші роки холодної війн.
У 1944-му Едвард Дмитрик мав необережність вступити до американської Комуністичної партії, і хоча режисер майже одразу з неї вийшов, йому це пригадали. Едвард та ще дев’ятеро колег відмовилися свідчити проти кінематографістів. “Голлівудську десятку” звинуватили у неповазі до Конгресу і покарали ув’язненням строком до 10 місяців та позбавлення можливості працювати за фахом.
Щоб мати можливість знімати, Едвард тимчасово виїхав до Великої Британії.
Після повернення у США він був заарештований і ув'язнений. Відсидівши 4 місяці, він у квітні 1951-го дав свідчення HUAC, назвавши імена членів партії. За це йому повернули можливість знімати фільми.
Створена у співпраці з продюсером Стенлі Крамером воєнна драма "Заколот на «Кейні»" (1954) стала однією з найкасовіших стрічок того року і мала 8 оскарівських номінацій, з них дві вдалося отримати: за найкращу чоловічу роль та найкращий фільм. Успіх приніс визнання Дмитрику, він став одним з провідних класиків Голлівуду.
У 1950-1960 роках режисер співпрацював з найуспішнішими студіями – Коламбія, ХХ Сторіччя Фокс, Метро Ґолден Маєр, Парамаунт Пікчерз. У його фільмах знімались такі імениті актори, як Кларк Ґейбл, Марлон Брандо, Монтґомері Кліфт, Дін Мартін, Джейн Фонда, Елізабет Тейлор, Шон Конері, Бріджит Бардо та ін.
Наприкінці 70-х років митець відійшов від режисури й вирішив присвятити себе викладанню. Читав лекції у Техаському та Південно-Каліфорнійському університетах. Написав кілька книг.
1 липня 1999 року Едвард Дмитрик відійшов у засвіти. Похований у меморіальному парку Форест Лоун у Голлівуді.
