Головний герой - містер Вінтроу приїжджає з Бостона в похмурий маєток, де на пагорбі розташувався похмурий будинок Ашерів. Видовище, що відкрилося йому, вражає - сама садиба і одноманітні околиці похмурі і нічим не радують око... Вінтроу хоче забрати з собою Медлін - сестру власника маєтку, з якою він заручений вже декілька місяців. Проте Родерік Ашер проти цього шлюбу і розкриває молодому чоловіку страшну таємницю прокляття роду Ашерів.Їх рід уражений давньою і дивною недугою «підвищеним нервовим роздратуванням», яка поволі вбиває сім'ю.
