Величний поетичний задум Довженка «Життя у цвіту» (1946–1947) кінематографічні чиновники безжально спотворили в канонічний історико-біографічний опус: фільм про життя та діяльність великого перетворювача природи, одного із засновників матеріалістичного напрямку в біологічній науці, російського вченого-біолога І. В. Мічуріна. Відкинувши пропозиції американців працювати за кордоном, Мічурін продовжує свої досліди в Росії, попри те, що його ідеї не сприймає царський уряд, церква та ідеалістична наука. Мічуріна підтримують видатні науковці країни. Після Жовтневої революції маленький мічурінський садок у місті Козлові (батьківщині біолога) стає великим державним розсадником. Але попри все, фільм викликав щирий захват у сучасників. Остап Вишня написав: «„Мічурін“ — це справжнє кіномистецтво».
