Прокинувшись після бурхливої ночі граф Бернстед повідомляє своєму дворецькому Раґлзу, що програв його в покер заможному американському подружжю. Тож за умовами договору, той негайно має приєднатися до Егберта та Еффі Флаудів, і відправитися з ними в маленьке провінційне містечко Ред-Геп на американському Заході. Незважаючи на статки, послуги дворецького Флаудам не особливо потрібні, але за задумом Еффі, британське походження Раґлза має суттєво підвищити аристократичність їхньої родини та спричинити фурор у світському житті місцевих багатіїв.
