Професор коледжу в провінційному американському містечку Сейвіллі Майкл Берджес написав серйозну історичну працю - книгу під назвою «Солодка свобода» про часи війни за незалежність США, засновану на реальних подіях. Незабаром літературними працями Борджеса зацікавилися кіношники і купили права на екранізацію його твору.У найтихіший Сейвілл приїжджає знімальна група для натурних зйомок.
