Екранізація популярного роману Артура Кларка про контакт з неземною цивілізацією. Дія серіалу починається в 2016 році. Над більшістю земних мегаполісів з'являються величезні кораблі. Раса могутніх прибульців відвідує Землю. Надволодарі, так їх прозвали, демонструють величезну перевагу своїх технологій над земними, негайно припинивши всі великі військові конфлікти. В якості посередника для спілкування з землянами, прибульці вибирають не одного з політичних лідерів, а звичайного землянина, фермера з американської глибинки Ріккі Стормґрена. Прибулець Карелл під час зустрічей пояснює свою позицію: землянам належить пройти виховання і поступове навчання. На Землі починається Золоте століття. Подарунок прибульців Стормґрену допомагає багатьом зцілитися від невиліковних захворювань. Однак не всім до душі примус, нехай навіть м'який і здійснюваний зовні з найкращих спонукань. На Землі виникає і набирає силу опір проти прибульців.
