Однак, бачачи сцени побиття і навіть розстрілу мирних індійських демонстрацій англійцями в серці розгорається скажений вогонь. У Ґанді за спиною - п'ятитисячолітня духовна мудрість її народу, яку, як виявилося, не так-то просто здолати мушкетами і затоптати солдатськими чобітьми. У 1983-му році він виграв вісім Оскарів.
