Це осучаснена версія легенди про Фауста. Сценічний актор Гендрік Гофґен, який користується визнанням критиків, втомився від легких розважальних театральних умовностей і шукає чогось більш революційного у дусі Брехта. Не дивлячись на ці свіжі ідеї, слава не розкриває своїх обіймів. Гендрік, що зневірився, продає свою душу, але не Дияволу, а нацистам, оскільки жадання слави сильніше ненависті до загарбників.
