Фільм оповідає про життя великого індійського правителя і вчителя людства Махатми Ґанді. Починаючи з його приїзду в південну Африку в 1893-му році і закінчуючи післявоєнною Індією - Ґанді завжди й скрізь проповідував тільки мирну боротьбу, мирну відповідь будь-якому насильству. І якщо спочатку це виглядало просто смішним для багатьох, то через півстоліття світ дізнався, що проста і одночасно велика людина привела свою країну до повної незалежності від англійських колонізаторів.
