Сюжет

Четверо осиротілих дітей, які раніше виховувалися старим клоуном, виступають у цирку, показуючи приголомшливі акробатичні трюки: вони відомі під назвою «Чотири дияволи». Один з акробатів здобув особливу увагу багатої і красивої жінки, що приходила на їх виступи: вона подає йому різні знаки уваги, і пізніше він приходить до неї в будинок. У них починається пристрасний роман, юнак ні про що, крім неї, думати не може, і це не йде на користь його тренуванням. Одна з «дияволів», дівчина, в нього закохана і, стурбована тим, що відбувається, намагається з ним поговорити; коли це ні до чого не призводить, вона слідкує за ним і дізнається про його стосунки з багатою дамою.

MikaÃ«l is an artist who rises as his teacher, the aging Zoret, falls. Zoret gives MikaÃ«l his start, and their relationship is sexual as well. Then MikaÃ«l takes up with the Princess Zamikoff, selling gifts from Zoret and even stealing from the master to pay for his carnal and luxurious life with her. He abandons Zoret, whose health begins to fail but who also discovers spirituality in his solitude. In a subplot, Alice Adelsskjold cuckolds her husband and takes a lover, the Duke of Monthieu; their relationship, infused with the eroticism of art, also gives way to religion as the duke becomes ill.
