Це відкриття збігається з прибуттям на Землю перших чужопланетян з екзопланети Вулкан (англ. Vulkan). Дія більшості серій відбувається на борту зоряного корабля «Ентерпрайз» (англ. "Enterprise"), який Земля спорядила для дослідження просторів глибокого космосу. З огляду на недосвідченість земного екіпажу в стосунках із розумними істотами інших планет, до екіпажу входить у якості наукового консультанта представник планети Вулкан.Серіал «Зоряний шлях» (англ. Star Trek: The Original Series) демонструвався в США в 1966–1968 роках. Ідея серіалу й перші сценарії належать Джину Роденбері.
