1953, a flood adding to the aftermath of World War II swells the numbers of Dutch emigrants. On a KLM flight to New Zealand, part of a race from London, Frank, who lost his family and colonial estate in the Japanese occupation and Indonesian civil war of Independence, meets some virtual mail order brides. Ada van Holland becomes his lover before confessing she's already married by proxy to gloomy Calvinist Derk. Jewish concentration camp survivor Esther dodges her engagement for a fashion career and discretely has her boy Bobby adopted by infertile Marjorie, who did everything else right with husband Hans. Over the years, some of their paths cross again, all survivors meet at Frank's funeral.

Bookkeeper Jacob newest client is the talented and flamboyant actress Anne. They first meet each other on her houseboat, the morning after the premiere of Anne's new theatrical play. Jacob soon discovers that Anne has made a mess of her personal finances and that she has several debts. She may even have to sell her houseboat. Anne gets into a blind panic as she definitely has no intention to sell the boat where she has so many memories. Jacob becomes fascinated about Anne's world and is not concerned anymore with his own personal life and wife. Anne is trying to get money and is convinced that Jacob can save her financial mess. Despite Anne's plans and efforts, the boat must be sold by auction. During the evening of the auction, Anne has organized a big good-bye dinner and has invited all her colleagues and friend on the boat. The film is a cheerful stylized musical comedy a la 8 femmes. The story happens in the guest-house of sister Klivia in one of the Dutch towns. The inhabitants of the guest-house are very cheerful and good-hearted persons whose open communal lifestyle is contrasted with the life of somewhat nasty and complaining neighbor behind the wall heer Boordevool. Boordevool has spent ages looking for reasons to shut the guest-house. One day a girl from the guest-house meets a nice young guy Gerrit. Sister Klivia lets Gerrit stay regardless of him being a thief. Will that give a chance to the insinuations of the neighbor?
