І ці «фрагменти розмови» цілком влаштовують професора. Інших бесід йому не треба. Та раптом метрономний побут професора несподівано порушують постояльці, яким він вимушено надає верхній поверх свого палаццо — маркіза Брумонті з молодим альфонсом Конрадом та її донька Льєтта з нареченим Стефано.
