У пролозі мова йде про далеке минуле і пам'ятники архітектури мексиканського півострову Юкатан.Ідилічна новела «Сандунга» - спомин про Мексику дофеодальних часів.
Новела «Магей» - драматична історія кохання бідного пеона і його нареченої.
«Фієста» - романтична любовна історія і бій биків.
«Солдадера» (четверта новела) не була знята Ейзенштейном. За задумом вона присвячувалася мексиканській революції 1910 року. В останній новелі використані фрески Оросько, Сикейроса, Рівери.
