1533 року, у той час, коли Європу охопили протести проти католицького духовенства, у німецькому місті Мюнстер з’являються двоє проповідників нової релігійної течії – анабаптисти Ян Бокельсон та Ян Маттіс. Завдяки палким промовам та обіцянкам вони досить швидко захоплюють владу у місті та започатковують «Новий Єрусалим» – мюнстерську комуну.Після смерті свого наставника молодий Бокельсон проголошує себе посланцем Бога та королем Мюнстера. З того часу комуну поглинають розпуста та насилля. Сам Бокельсон, посилаючись на Старий Заповіт, одружується одночасно з 18-ма жінками.
Католицьке духовенство постійно намагається повернути владу у місті. Проте мешканці мюнстерської комуни готові боротись до останнього…
