After months without pay, the already disgruntled crew on a Turkish cargo ship arrives in an Egyptian port and learns that the Port Authority is foreclosing on them. Ordered to anchor offshore, the remaining skeleton crew has their passports seized and must maintain the vessel until its owner’s debts are paid. Tensions quickly arise between the authoritarian Cypriot captain, his devoutly religious second-in-command, an affable cook, and a trio of newcomers to the ship—a pair of druggie ne’er-do-wells and the near-mute, hulking Kurd. As months pass, food and entertainment dwindle, alliances shift, and the men take out their raw frustration on one another.

Lena is a bright, disabled girl who, after years spent studying at home, is keen to get back to school. She is assigned to a special class for disabled pupils who have to present themselves before a school commission at the end of the year in order to prove that they merit being moved back into a "normal" class. Her enervated teachers, however, show absolutely no desire to motivate the students and help them improve; on the contrary, they try to quash right from the start any interest Lena shows in more complex study material. Nevertheless, Lena soon involves herself in the school routine and gets together with classmate Anton. Yet their transparent happiness is not to everyone's liking and repercussions soon follow.

Головною героїнею цього фільму є маленька дівчинка, яку звуть Олександра. Вона дуже доброзичлива і найголовніше весела дитина, але ось що стосується поведінки і акуратності, то у Олександри дуже великі проблеми. Батьки разом з бабусею і дідусем, а також рідний братик і навіть кіт Багет хапаються за голови через досить таки огидну поведінку нашої дівчинки. Не дивлячись на всі недоліки більше всього на світі любить Сашу тільки вірний пес Бовдур. Під Новий рік бабуся Саші вирішила загадати одне заповітне бажання, яке відноситься до всієї родини Петрових: вона захотіла щоб погана дівчинка якимось чином залишилася в минулому році, а та що є гарною - з'явилася в новому.
