Фільм за біографією відомого німецького боксера Макса Шмелінга, що був в 1930—1932 роках чемпіоном світу у важкій вазі. Розквіт кар'єри Шмелінга довівся на час правління в країні нацистів, коли знаменитий боксер незалежно від своєї волі став символом режиму. Розуміючи, що перемоги на рингу роблять його практично недоторканним для правлячої партії, Шмелінг вирішує залишитися в країні, не зважаючи на те, що це рішення підштовхує його до непростого морального вибору. Будучи одруженим на дівчині єврейського походження, допомагаючи своїм друзям і сусідам рятуватися від переслідування, спортсмен в той же самий час повинен сумлінно виконувати обов'язки символу нацистської Німеччини — відвідувати прийоми і позувати репортерам поряд з Гітлером і Геббельсом. Але у Шмелінга є перевага перед тими, кого він вважає своїми ворогами — він точно знає: щоб перемогти, потрібно вивчити вразливі місця суперника.
