Kwagga Robertse owns a farm shop in the fictional Southern African country of Nambabwe and usually cons foreign tourists by pretending to kill a lion, thus earning him the nickname 'Urumbo' (Lion Killer) from the country's natives. Kwagga is upset when the UN sends a platoon of incompetent soldiers with the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (U.N.T.A.G.), to monitor the peace process, and ensure free and fair elections after the Nambabwean War for Independence. The U.N.T.A.G's American leader, Major Bradick D. Mackay and his second-in-command, Captain Zapman are offered a diamond worth a lot of money in the U.S., and they must pay 200,000 USD to Duan Robertse, Kwagga's competitive brother trying to buy a farm left to them by their dead father.

Сюжет фільму відбувається у 1980 році в Ботсвані (дату названо по ходу сюжету). У незайманій цивілізацією савані проживає дике плем'я бушменів. Все починається з того, що головний герой фільму бушмен Хі знайшов у пустелі небачений предмет - пляшку з під кока-коли. Пляшка, якою хотіли володіти всі, внесла смуту в спокійне первісне життя племені і Хі вирішив віднести небезпечний «дар богів» від гріха подалі за край світу.Бушмен вирушає в далеку подорож, в якій стикається з сучасною цивілізацією. Йому трапляються по дорозі хороші і погані люди. Вчений-біолог Ендрю Стейн і його друг африканець Мпуді рятують Хі від загибелі, коли той потрапив у в'язницю. Паралельним сюжетом показана спроба державного перевороту в країні, де при владі стоять військові, з якими борються повстанці.

In 1879, the British suffer a great loss at the Battle of Isandlwana due to incompetent leadership. Cy Endfield co-wrote the epic prequel Zulu Dawn 15 years after his enormously popular Zulu. Set in 1879, this film depicts the catastrophic Battle of Isandhlwana, which remains the worst defeat of the British army by natives, with the British contingent outnumbered 16-to-1 by the Zulu tribesmen. The film's opinion of events is made immediately clear in its title sequence: ebullient African village life presided over by King Cetshwayo is contrasted with aristocratic artifice under the arrogant eye of General Lord Chelmsford (Peter O'Toole). Chelmsford is at the heart of all that goes wrong, initiating the catastrophic battle with an ultimatum made seemingly for the sake of giving his troops something to do.
