Немолодий маг Ерасмус Крейвен, удівець у жалобі, нудьгує вдома у товаристві своєї чарівної дочки. Звичний сімейний спокій порушує поява крука, точніше, іншого чарівника у подобі крука, який досить безцеремонно вимагає спершу вина, а потім — щоб його терміново перетворили на людину, а саме, чарівника Адольфуса Бедлоу. Перетворення вдалося, але й після цього нахаба не вгамовується: він розповідає власникові замку, що той даремно оплакує дружину, бо та жива-живісінька і проживає нині у сусідньому замку зі злобним чаклуном доктором Скарабусом, який і перетворив його на птаха. А може, й не сама дружина, а її неприкаяна душа. Звичайно, наш "удівець" вирушає у замок, сподіваючись на те, що розповідь непроханого гостя — вигадка. Але правда виявляється куди серйознішою, ніж можна було чекати.
