Однак від цього вона не стає менш важливою або життєвої, адже життя - її головна тема. Події розгортаються на кордоні між Абхазією і Грузією, де протікає річка Інгурі. Недалеко від берега літній абхазець зауважує невеликий острівець і вирішує сховатися там разом з онукою від метушливого світу, в якому війна - єдиний спосіб залагоджувати конфлікти. Героя драми «Кукурудзяний острів» не бентежить, що на обраній ним землі нічого крім землі немає. Принісши все необхідне з собою, чоловік відразу ж починає займатися облагороджуванням території. Використовуючи нехитрі інструменти, він будує невеликий будиночок, в якому можуть поміститися двоє людей. Закінчивши зводити стіни і встановлювати дах, герой приймається за навколишнє землю, перетворюючи її в міні-поле для кукурудзи. За допомогою працьовитою внучки він садить кукурудзяні зерна, вже зараз уявляючи, наскільки багатим буде урожай. Але дочекатися цього моменту старому буде непросто, особливо після того, як він вкриє в будинку пораненого хлопця, який втік від військового патруля.
