В Лос-Анджелесі Отто Медокса звільнено з нудної роботи у супермаркеті через суперечку з паном Гамфрісом. Заради його кращого друга Дюка подруга Деббі залишає Отто. Пригнічений і подавлений він блукає по вулицях і знайомиться з експропріатором Бадом. Той влаштовує Отто до себе в корпорацію "Рука Допомоги", яка займається автоконфіскатом. Він вчиться викрадати машини злісних неплатників за рахунками. Отто захоплюється кодексом експропріаторів, вживанням наркотиків, погонями, великими комісійними за угон автомобілів, а колишнє життя здається йому нудним.В цей час у місті з'являється доктор Джей Френк Парнел з лабораторії в Лос-Аламосі на своєму Шевроле Малібу 64-го року. В багажнику його машини знаходиться викрадений з бази військово-повітряних сил труп прибульця, який випромінює потужну радіацію. Кожен, хто відкриває багажник перетворюється на попіл. Між тим корпорації "Рука Допомоги" і іншим експропріаторам міста запропоновано суму двадцять тисяч доларів за цю машину. Більшість автоконфіскаторів через велику винагороду припускають, що автомобіль пов'язаний з наркотиками.
