Mike Hamilton, a Philadelphia lawyer, comes to Naples to settle the estate of his long estranged "black sheep" brother. Once there, he discovers that the deceased has left an eight-year old little boy named Nando, who is being raised by Michael's sister-in-law Lucia Curcio. Mike immediately disapproves of Nando's Italian-style (in other words "lax") education. To make matters worse, Lucia happens to be ... a sexy nightclub dancer. This is too much for a puritan like Mike and the only solution in his eyes is to have the boy brought up in the States...

Безтурботні Чистильники взуття або Шуша (назва «шуша» походить від неправильної неаполітанської вимови «шушайна» (англ. shoe-shiner), що означає «чистильник взуття»), що втискуються зі своїми дерев'яними ящиками в потік вуличного натовпу, викроюючи клапоть тротуару для своєї простої праці, зберігаючи крихти, заглядають в майбутнє, яке затьмарює підступний удар.Ворожий світ проти хлопчачої мрії: повівшись на розведення дорослих шахраїв, хлопчики потрапляють в тюрму, де панують суворий порядок і нездоровий цинізм, де примітивні звичаї розбійної компанії йдуть пліч о пліч з жорстокістю наглядачів, затискаючи дітей між молотом злочинності та ковадлом правосуддя, що вбивають наївну дитячу мрію. Щира дитина, не здатна розпізнати обман, породжує ланцюжок помилок, що призводить до неминучого фатального фіналу.
"Шуша" став одним із перших неореалістичних фільмів і приніс своїм творцям славу не тільки в Італії, а й у всьому світі і у 1948 році отримав першу премію Оскар фільму іноземною мовою.
