Далеке майбутнє .. Космічний корабель «Паломіно», пролітаючи повз «чорну діру», виявив на орбіті зниклий безвісти 12 років тому зореліт «Лебідь». Не дивлячись на загрозу бути навіки полоненими жахливим полем тяжіння «дірки», екіпаж «Паломіно» приймає фатальне рішення зійти на борт міжзоряного «летючого голландця» і розгадати таємницю його зникнення.Що ж побачили астронавти: корабель населений тільки роботами, а єдиною людиною виявився доктор Гайнс Рейнґардт, геніальний, але явно божевільний учений, який одержимий ідеєю проникнення в «чорну діру» і готовий поставити на карту і своє і чужі життя, аби здійснити свою шалену мрію про стрибок у безодню.
