Middle-aged Oscar winning actress Margaret Elliot - Maggie to those that know her - is a Hollywood has-been. Her life is in shambles. She clings to the hope of resurrecting her past movie stardom as a leading ingénue. No one will hire her, she's penniless with creditors selling off anything that she owns that is of monetary value, and she has no one to turn to that can see her through financially. She has in the past supported her sister and brother-in-law, who still want to use her as their meal ticket. Divorced from her actor husband, she shares joint custody of their teen-aged daughter Gretchen, from who Maggie tries to hide her problems. When it looks as if Maggie has hit rock bottom, Jim Johannsen re-enters her life. Jim, who once had the stage name Barry Lester, got his big break in Hollywood movies by Maggie. He came to the quick realization that he was neither good as an actor or that he wanted to do it as a profession. He now works as a boat parts supplier and mechanic. Jim tries to help her come to the realization of the stage of life that she is in to help her reinvent herself. But Maggie wants to regain her star status on her own terms, and does whatever she needs to for that great ingénue role that has eluded her for so many years.

Below the surface, the three have deeper stories, which are bringing them back to Los Angeles and which Dr. Fortness and Binky divulge to David. Dr. Fortness, an alcoholic, is returning to own up to his drunken part in the death of a friend, and his wife Claire's complicity in the matter. Binky, after being away in New York for a year, is returning to her husband, Mike Carr, hoping to take him away from his overbearing mother, former vaudeville star Sally Carr, who still basks in her former but no longer shining glory, and who is the cause of any marital problem she and Mike have had as she sees Binky as competition in every sense of the word. Because of an incident en route and his burgeoning friendship with them, David feels compelled to help them resolve their issues. Specifically in dealing with Eddie's life, David is forced to reflect on his own and the reason he left his home in Midland City, Iowa.

Шарлотта Вейл — самотня стара діва з аристократичної родини з Бостона, усе життя жила на межі нервового зриву, в оточенні самих лиш заборон, нав'язаних надто суворою матір'ю. Її невістка Ліза знайомить її з лікарем-психіатром доктором Жакуїтом. Він виводить Шарлотту з-під гніту матері, помістивши її спочатку під свій нагляд в санаторій, а потім за допомогою Лізи відряджає її у тривалий круїз Латинською Америкою.Подорожуючи під чужим ім'ям, Шарлотта, хоча й значно змінилася з вигляду, цурається товариства й майже не виходить з каюти. Та на одній зі стоянок вона ділить автомобіль з Джеррі Дюррансом, якому вдається розворушити дівчину. Вони все більше часу проводять разом. Однак Джеррі одружений, його дружина маніпулює ним у своїх цілях, у шлюбі його тримає лише молодша дочка — тиха дівчинка, яку матір утримує під суворим контролем. У Ріо-де-Жанейро автомобіль, на якому їхали Шарлотта з Джеррі, потрапляє в аварію. Вони змушені лишитися на ніч на горі Цукрова голова, через що запізнюються на пароплав. Джеррі зізнається Шарлотті в коханні й просить її не поспішати з від'їздом — якщо вона полетить літаком через п'ять днів, то наздожене свій пароплав у Буенос-Айресі. Закохані проводять разом ці дні, після чого розлучаються.Коли Шарлотта повертається в дім деспотичної матері, спогади про Джеррі допомагають їй жити новим вільним життям. Шарлотта стає все більш популярною серед місцевого товариства, де раніше не бувала, в неї з'являються шанувальники, але вона не може забути Джеррі. У санаторії доктора Жакуїта вона знайомиться з Тіною, дочкою Джеррі, й починає їй допомагати. У цьому вона бачить своє призначення і знову стає ближчою до Джеррі.
