Опритомнів він на другий день десь за містом, без документів і грошей, а найгірше, що після удару по голові, лікар утратив пам'ять. Не пам'ятаючи хто він, лікар стає волоцюгою і рятується випадковими заробітками. Через п'ятнадцять років він наймається до мельника Прокопа у млин і ставить на ноги сина господаря – Василя, який після нещасного випадку не міг ходити.
