La llegada de un equipo cinematográfico a un pequeño pueblo causa un gran revuelo. Vienen a rodar escenas de la pelÃcula "La hija de Juan Simón". Una de las muchachas del pueblo, Carmela, rompe el corazón de su pretendiente Antonio al enamorarse de Alfonso Guzmán, el actor principal, con el que tiene un idilio que finaliza cuando el equipo termina el rodaje de las escenas y se marcha de vuelta a Madrid. Carmela está enamorada de Alfonso, asà que decide dejar a su padre Ramón y a su tÃa Sebastiana y acudir a la gran ciudad para estar con su amado. Pero Alfonso, que en realidad es un sinvergüenza, no está enamorado de Carmela. Le cede un apartamento para que ella se establezca, donde se encuentran frecuentemente. La mantiene durante algún tiempo, y luego le consigue pequeños papeles en sus pelÃculas. Cierto dÃa ella envÃa una carta a su padre diciéndole que se ha casado, carta a la que acompaña una falsa fotografÃa de boda realizada para uno de los rodajes. Pasa el tiempo y Alfonso se cansa de ella, y entonces le confiesa que no tiene intención de casarse con ella. Ella, destrozada, le abandona, y termina dedicándose a la prostitución...
