It's the summer of 1982. Canada World Airways' brand-new Boeing 767 leaves Montreal bound for Edmonton. When the plane reaches its cruise altitude, the impossible happens: the plane runs out of fuel, due to a miscalculation by the ground staff in Montreal. "Moody" is an Iranian doctor living in America with his American wife Betty and their child Mahtob. Wanting to see his homeland again, he convinces his wife to take a short holiday there with him and Mahtob. Betty is reluctant, as Iran is not a pleasant place, especially if you are American and female. Upon arrival in Iran, it appears that her worst fears are realized: Moody declares that they will be living there from now on. Betty is determined to escape from Iran, but taking her daughter with her presents a larger problem.

Він спробував вивезти з Туреччини 100 грамів гашишу, але його спіймали. У підсумку він був засуджений до 4 років в'язниці. Він терпляче виносив всі митарства, поки за 53 дні до виходу випадково не дізнався, що йому збираються збільшити термін ще на 30 років. І тоді він вирішив, що єдиний шанс вижити - «опівнічний експрес», тобто втеча. З першої спроби втекти не вдалося. Убивши в жорстокому двобої людину, яка підставила його друга, він і не подумав здатися...
