Екранізація автобіографічній повісті Маргеріт Дюрас «Коханець». Це був перший західний фільм після 1975 року, знятий у В'єтнамі при активній участі в'єтнамських кінематографістів. Номінації премії «Оскар» за «найкращу операторську роботу» та Японської кіноакадемії в номінації «Найкращий іноземний фільм», переможець французької премії «Сезар» за «найкращу музику» і Golden Reel Award за «найкращу музику». Головні герої — молода дівчина і Китаєць (так вони звуться у фільмі). Китаєць підвозить її до пансіону на своїй машині, після чого вони починають зустрічатися як коханці в занедбаному будинку. Роман розвивається стрімко, але їх одруження неможливе з огляду на культурні традиції: його сім'я вже призначила дату весілля з рівною йому китаянкою. Вони обидва знають, що у них немає спільного майбутнього, і тому на словах прагнуть переконати один одного і самі себе, що їх зв'язок не заснований на почуттях...

A women's prison. Women arrive, some for as long as eight years. They work making teddy bears. Dessombes, the head matron, misses little. She gets intelligence from Marthe, an older convict. When the uncompromising and difficult Nelly is sent to the hole for something she didn't do, the women suspect that Marthe had a hand in it. Brigitte breaks off their friendship, so Marthe adopts Nicole, guilty of infanticide and shunned by the other prisoners, as her surrogate daughter. Sabine, young, energetic, and one of the few with a husband who visits her, falls in love with Lucie, a woman who has given up on life and fears the day of her release. Tensions mount.
