In 1566, in Guanabara, the TupinambÃ¡ warrior Abeguar is in love with JanaÃna. When a jaguar attacks Abeguar and JanaÃna, he jumps off a cliff with her and he flies. The shaman advises Abeguar that he was the chosen one by the god MunhÃ£ to lead his tribe and fight against the evil AnhangÃ¡. When the tribe leader PiatÃ£ joins the French in the fight against the Portuguese, the entire TupinambÃ¡s are slaughtered and Abeguar turns into a bird that flies for more than two hundred years to find Janaina. In 1825, the warrior is Manuel Balaio that lives with JanaÃna and their two daughters in MaranhÃ£o. When one of his daughters is raped by the abusive police commander, Balaio leads the oppressed locals against the police and they take down the Caxias city. The government sends Duque de Caxias and his troops that vanquish the rebels and Balaio turns into a bird again that flies for more than one hundred and forty years to find JanaÃna again. In 1968, in Rio, the warrior is Cau, but JanaÃna is a revolutionary student that lives with another insurgent. When Cau and JanaÃna are arrested by the repressive police, Cau rats the insurgents to protect JanaÃna from the torture and he becomes an outcast by his former fellows. Only the jailer FeijÃ£o talks to him and Cau teaches him politics. With the amnesty, Cau moves to the slums with FeijÃ£o and becomes a teacher and member of the criminal group Falange Vermelha. When the police invade the slum, Cau turns into a bird again that flies for more than one hundred years to find JanaÃna again. In 2096, in Rio de Janeiro, very few people can afford water that is mostly used in the ethanol plantations by the governmental company AquabrÃ¡s. The warrior is now a journalist and JanaÃna a call-girl. When the president of AquabrÃ¡s is kidnapped by a group of insurgents, the warrior sees JanaÃna on television and heads to AquabrÃ¡s to save her.

A boat with tourists is sailing up the river through the jungle. Suddenly they come face-to-face with Indians, naked apart from their paint, with self-made weapons at the ready. The tourists sail on excitedly. The Indians put on their jeans and collect their daily wages. The Guarani, one of Brazil's oldest Indian communities, are forced to live in a reservation. A small group of Guarani decide to leave the reservation and settle in a traditional territory that has belonged to white men for several generations. The clash between two conflicting cultures is conceived as a suspense story with mystical elements. The actors are real Indians with no actor training.

In 1970, near the World Cup, Daniel Stern and his wife Miriam leaves Belo Horizonte in a hurry and scared with their ten years old son Mauro in their Volkswagen. While traveling to SÃ£o Paulo, the couple explains Mauro that they will travel on vacation and will leave Mauro with his grandfather MÃ³tel. Daniel promises to return before the first game of the Brazilian National Soccer Team in the Cup. The boy is left in Bom Retiro, a Jewish and Italian neighborhood, and waits for MÃ³tel in front of his apartment. When the next door neighbor Shlomo arrives, he tells the boy that MÃ³tel had just had a heart attack and died. Alone and without knowing where his parents are, the boy is lodged by Shlomo and the Jewish community. Through the young neighbor Hanna, Mauro makes new friends, cheers for the Brazilian team and sees the movement of the police and militaries on the streets while waiting for his parents.
