У давні часи в Лапландії хлопчик на ім'я Ніколас трагічно втрачає батьків. Жителі села вирішують взяти його на піклування. На кожне Різдво його бере до себе нова родина на один рік. На знак подяки Ніколас перед відходом дарує дітям прощальні подарунки - саморобні іграшки. Після голодного року жителі змушені віддати хлопчика на виховання у віддалений хутір, де йому доводиться жити і працювати у старого дратівливого теслі, який забороняє йому робити подарунки на Різдво... Традиція різдвяних подарунків могла перерватися вже тоді. Але, на щастя, Ніколас придумав, як зробити так, щоб кожен рік на Різдво діти і дорослі отримували подарунки.
