Li Zhishan is a rich man, but wealth cannot keep the loyalties of his wife, who has been visiting the bed of a rival. She helps plot against him, and the Vicious Long Brothers invade his home and steal the Golden Dragon Blade - a sword that makes its wielder unbeatable. Zhishan, crippled in the attack, and his young daughter are whisked away by a devoted servant, and the trio soon find shelter in the home of an herbalist. Years pass, the daughter grows up to be a lovely young woman and a powerful fighter, and the Long Brothers use the Golden Dragon Blade to gain power in the region. Zhishan's family of sorts has managed to stay well hidden, but a trip into the city - the daughter's first - sets off an old power struggle as Zhishan's wife discovers her daughter is quite alive.

The Sword and the Lute sees the Gan family mostly now in seclusion after the end of the previous film, The Twin Swords. The twin swords of the previous film are transporting a deadly Lute when they are set upon by robbers from the Flying Tiger clan. They use the Lute which is a mistake as it reveals it and later they discover that it has been stolen and now this deadly needle-firing weapon is in the hands of the Flying Tigers. The only thing which can cure injuries caused by the Lute is the Seven Stars stone, which the Shen clan know the location of. The robbers set up a trick to reveal the location of the stone to cure their injured but also have the weapon and the cure. Meanwhile a third artifact, the Invincible sword, is the only thing that can destroy the Lute - and it is in the hands of the Gan family's youngest member - Hsiao Ling. All the various groups try to work out how they can control all three artifacts without losing the ones they have.

During the late Ming Dynasty a heroic swordsman named Lu Fang (Jimmy Wang Yu) returns from battle to discover that several poor farmers have kidnapped a ruthless local magistrate's only daughter. Lu Fang soon joins their cause after learning that this is simply an act of desperation to improve their horrifically low standards of living and extremely high taxation. The magistrate also holds an important petition from the townspeople. Becoming increasingly frustrated, the magistrate hires bandits, assassins, and another fighter named Huang Liang (Cheng Lui) to get his daughter back. Huang quickly recognizes Lu from past battles in the frontier and joins him in fighting the bandits and assassins. The standoff comes to an abrupt end when the magistrate threatens the life of one of the farmer's daughters. Lu convinces the magistrate to punish him in place of the farmers. Then Lu finds out that he has been lied to. The magistrate's daughter (Chin Ping) and a peerless fighter (Lo Lieh), along with Huang help Lu to escape and recover the petition. Finally, our heroes make sure that the petition will get to a higher-ranking official so that the town's suffering, starvation, and unfair taxation can end.
