Узимку 1590 року в Кольмарі голландський друкар і гравер Гендрік Ґольціус звертається до маркіза Ельзаського з проханням про виділення коштів на створення друкарні, яка буде видавати ілюстровані книги. Ґольціус вважає, що перші дві книги слід піднести Маркізу і його свиті. Цими книгами повинні стати ілюстроване видання Старого Заповіту, що містить шість історій з еротичним змістом, і ілюстроване видання Метаморфоз Овідія, що містить історію зрад Юпітера.Щоб ще сильніше спокусити Маркіза, Ґольциус і його типографські працівники готуються поставити перед свитою Маркіза серію еротичних вистав. Маркіз, людина, відома широтою поглядів, піддається спокусі Ґольціуса.
