Дія відбувається у 60-х роках минулого століття. Хлопчик на ім'я Бен живе з батьками, кожен з яких має пунктик: мати без розуму від кінозірок, а батько обожнює свій човен і кожну вільну хвилину займається його ремонтом. Все змінюється, коли до їхнього будинку потрапляє дівчинка Кессі, яка вижила в автокатастрофі, яка занапастила її батьків. Влада хоче, щоб Кессі після того, як трохи видужає, була передана під опіку своєї бабусі. Але Кессі вмовляє Бена втекти з нею до Балтімора, де в неї живуть дядько з тіткою.

Sarah Daniels taught in a Lancaster school and developed deep prejudice against minorities, especially blacks. She decided to re-locate to Belmont, Vermont with the hopes that it will be 'all white', and gets hired in Belmont College. She does not disclose her past to anyone, but when an African-American student, Simon Brick, becomes the victim of hate crime, she soon realizes that not only will her past return to haunt her, she will be expected to be the liaison person for the minorities, as well as be asked to prepare a 10-point bullet-ed list to resolve racism.

Joe Braxton is an ex-con who has been given a second chance to freedom after violating his probation. He has been hired by a school teacher named Vivian Perry to repair and drive an old school bus and drive a group of Special kids to Ms. Perry's Washington Farm from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to give them a new home after The Clarmont Center for Children is shut down by the city. The kids have severe mental problems and Joe is not looking forward to the trip at all, but Joe later bonds with Vivian and the children, offering his support and love and changes his outlook on life. But Donald, the social worker and Vivian's lover who gave Joe his break is hot on their tail and wants Joe back in prison. Joe and Vivian must now prevent Donald from sending the children back to Philidelphia where they'll have no future.
