Aristide Paoloni salva dal Tevere dove si era gettato Gennaro Vaccariello. Il fatto gli torna comodo anche perchè le elezioni sono vicine. Ma il giorno dopo il salvataggio Gennaro si presenta a casa sua e gli chiede di essere ospitato: Aristide gli ha ridato la vita ed ora questa vita é una sua responsabilità . Sempre per via delle elezioni Paoloni accetta e così Vaccariello si installa a casa del commedatore portando con sè i sei figli e uno zio a carico. Tra suo figlio maggiore, Raffaele, e la figlia di Aristide, Irene si instaura un rapporto di odio-amore e la situazione in casa si fa sempre più insostenibile.
