У 1775 році, після знищення Запорізької Січі, деякі українці у пошуках "вільних земель", під впливом козачої старшини переселилася за Дунай і потрапили під владу султанської Туреччини. Діаспорна версія української класики представляє інтерес не тільки знаменитими танцювальними постановками, колоритом північноамериканської природи, дуже схожої з українською, картинами українських сіл, відтвореними для фільмування. Він є ще й своєрідним викликом радянській кінопропаґанді тих часів.
