Це історія Томаса Кромвеля, юриста колись могутнього кардинала Вулсі та радника короля Англії Генріха Восьмого. Після двадцяти років шлюбу король не має спадкоємця. Він хоче розірвати шлюб з королевою Катериною Арагонською та взяти за дружину Анну Болейн. Але кардинал не добився на це дозволу від Папи Римського та опинився в немилості. Кромвель хоче переконати короля повернути Вулсі та допомогти йому розірвати шлюб. Чи зможе він сам отримати прихильність короля? А якщо так, чи не завелика буде ціна?

Nine years later, former codebreaker Susan is a housewife and mother, but she continues to recognize patterns that surround her in everyday life. When a series of women are brutally murdered around London, Susan sees a pattern emerging. However, when a police-search for what Susan believes to be an overlooked victim turns up nothing, she realizes she cannot solve this puzzle alone. Enlisting three former Bletchley Park colleagues: Millie, Lucy, and Jean; Susan knows they have little time to break this code before the killer strikes again.

Марта Костелло — талановитий баррістер, яка спеціалізується на захисті підсудних. Прагне отримати шовкову мантію королівського адвоката. Заради цього вона береться за найскладніші справи і кидає виклик всім суперникам чоловікам. А головним з них є її колега по адвокатській палаті Клайв Рідер. Незважаючи на давнє знайомство, між цими двома існує жорстока конкуренція, бо обоє розуміють: два королівських адвоката на маленьку палату — занадто. Клайв володіє негласною підтримкою Біллі Лемба — головного клерка палати. Він спеціально віддає Марті нестандартні справи, змушуючи її працювати до виснаження. При цьому він симпатизує їй, але ставку робить на більш сильного і витривалого, на його думку, Рідера.Сюжет
