Renek, son of the Nováks, a taxi-driver who drives only foreigners with the western currency invents for his parents a plan: he founds a club of the Nováks and every Novák is to send an enrollment fee of 5 crowns to the address of the grandfather of the Nováks who lives in a small house. He is suddenly being haunted by a vicious feeling expressed by four tones f-ges-e-f. He decides to immediately return back home with his wife Anna (Jana Hlavácková). On the train back home he immerses in his long forgotten memories. Fifteen years ago, when he was a violinist at a theatre orchestra, he got fascinated by the beauty and performance of an actress Josefina Cermáková (Jana Hlavácová). This film, chronicling the last days of Czech resistance fighter Maruska Kuderikova (played by Magda Vasaryova), is based on her diaries. Though she was tortured and eventually executed by the Nazis, her diaries indicate that she was optimistic for the humanity of her captors and did not by any means hate them. Карл Копфрінгл, працівник крематорію в невеликому чеському містечку, виконує свою роботу з відданістю: перед тим, як кремувати тіло, він завжди гарно його оформлює. Дружина, син і донька Копфрінгла теж не можуть поскаржитися на брак уваги. Незабаром Чехія потрапляє до рук нацистів.
