Італійський кінорежисер і сценарист. Народився в Баґерії, поряд з Палермо. У 16 він почав цікавитись акторською майстерністю і театром, а також керував постановками п’єс Луїджі Піранделло та Едуардо Де Філіппо. Спершу він працював як самозайнятий фотограф. Пізніше перейшов у кіно і дебютував документальним фільмом ЕТНІЧНІ МЕНШИНИ СИЦИЛІЇ, завоювавши приз фестивалю в Салерно. До виходу його першого повнометражного фільму КАМОРРИСТ у 1986 році працював на італійському телебаченні. Фільм отримав сх ... вальні відгуки серед глядачів і критиків, і Торнаторе було нагороджено «Срібною стрічкою» за найкращу режисуру. У 1988 році співпраця з продюсером Франком Крістальді подарувала світу найбільш відому роботу Торнаторе — НОВИЙ КІНОТЕАТР «ПАРАДІЗО». Фільм здобув світовий успіх, а також премію «Оскар» за найкращий фільм іноземною мовою.
