1204 рік, Норвегію роздирає громадянська війна. Незаконно народженого сина короля Хокона III Сверрессона і Інги з Вартейга зберігають в глибокій таємниці. Хлопчик був позашлюбним сином короля і народився після його смерті, що спровокувало криваву міжусобицю. Біркебейнери (ополчення, створене його дідом, королем Сверре Сігурдсон) визнали хлопчика спадкоємцем трону Норвегії. Однак католицькі священики оголосили полювання на дитину з метою його знищення.

У 1206 році група озброєних біркебейнериів допомогла Інзі і Хокону бігти на північ під заступництвом короля Інге Бордссона.
