Дія відбувається в невеликому шахтарському містечку, розташованому в центральній частині Швеції. Там разом зі своєю родиною живе Вероніка Грен, яка працює в поліції. З дитинства героїня страждає від видінь. Щоправда, вона позбавляється від них, коли приймає таблетки, що продаються за рецептом лікаря. Однак час від часу вони призводять до нічних кошмарів і розладів психіки. Одного разу в річці жінка бачить мертвого хлопчика на ім'я Оскар. Вероніка практично впевнена, що це її чергова галюцинація. Надалі вона швидко розуміє, що до неї приходять жертви злочинів, які не були розкриті.
