Clemson Reade, a business tycoon with marriage on his mind, and Effie, a U.S. diplomat, are a modern couple. Unfortunately there seems to be too much business and not enough pleasure on the part of Effie. When Clemson meets Tarji, a princess trained in all the arts of pleasing men, he decides he wants an old fashioned girl. Princess Tarji's father is king of oil-rich Bukistan. Because of the oil situation and to maintain good political relations during the courtship between Clemson & Tarji, the State Department assigns a diplomat to maintain protocol until the wedding. Effie!

Plot centers around how a young recruit (Audie Murphy) faces the horrors of war. Character vascilates between wanting to fight and doubting his own courage. In midst of first bloody encounter, Youth runs away. After seeing dead and wounded, sense of shame leads him back to his unit, where he distinguishes himself in the next battle. Having overcome his fear of "the great Death" he knows e can face whatever comes. За мотивами однойменного твору Редьярда Кіплінґа.Командир 1-го батальйону Ратлендширського полку, полковник Брансвік мав надійного помічника, капітана Пінденні, і трьох здібних, але не завжди надійних рядових, Акройда, Маллоя та Сайкса, які протягом вісімнадцяти років були «королівськими льодяниками"; втікали, щоб випити, побитися та пограти в азартні ігри, коли могли. Всупереч їхнім бажанням, один з них мусив бути підвищений до сержанта, щоб розлучити їх. Вибір впав на Акройда. Після повідомлення про заворушення в Мірзабаді, Брансвік і його батальйон відкликано та підпорядковано суперникові полковнику Ґроту з 28-го гусарського полку та його офіційному ад’ютанту майору Мерсеру.
Сайкс і Маллой стають частиною невеличкого загону, що під командуванням Мерсера та Пінденні вирушає до покинутого форту в Імарі, в якості приманки для повстанців.
