Після того, як у 1870 році сильний ураган спустошив Ямайку, подружжя англійців Торнтонів, що проживають на цьому острові, вирішують відправити на історичну батьківщину, в Англію, своїх п'ятьох дітей. На одному кораблі з цими дітьми виявляються ще двоє дітей із родини Фернандес. Дорогою на них нападають пірати на чолі з капітаном Чавесом. Граючись, діти перебираються на судно піратів. Забувши про дітей, пірати схаменуться тільки тоді, коли пограбоване і відпущене ними судно вже зникло вдалині. Спроба висадити дітей на берег у портовому містечку Тампіко не вдається, і юні герої залишаються на піратському кораблі, де швидко освоюються в новій обстановці, явно віддаючи перевагу товариству піратів.
