The station keeper Kruglikov was exiled to a remote Siberian village many years ago for shooting his superior, a general, who demanded that he go with him as a matchmaker to Kruglikov's favorite girl, Raya. A political exile is brought to the station. She turns out to be Raya. For a few minutes the former bride and groom were together, and then she was taken away again.

Колись давно батько Остапа залишив злиденне село і вирушив на заробітки до Донбасу. Побудований Ніканором дім поклав початок шахтарському селищу Собачеєвка. Остап пішов батьковим шляхом та тридцять років пропрацював на господаря шахти. Але коли батька звільнили з роботи, Остап зрозумів, що безглуздо звинувачувати у своїх бідах тільки керівництво. Зустрівшись із робочим-революціонером Гарбузом, він стає одним із лідерів революційного руху серед шахтарів Донбасу.Екранізація однойменного біографічного роману Олександра Авдєєнко, що свого часу стала справжньою подією в культурному житті Радянського Союзу, і разом з тим, один з найкращих фільмів уродженця Маріуполя, режисера Леоніда Лукова.
Лукова справедливо називали співцем Донбасу, і саме тут відбувалася дія щонайменше п’яти його стрічок. Проте, навіть серед них, «Я люблю» стоїть окремо. Ця картина виділяється своєю незвичною казковою інтонацію, настроєм і справжньою романною формою.
