Mads Skjern arrives in the small Danish town of KorsbÃ¦k in 1929. Hans Christian VarnÃ¦s, manager of the town bank, refuses him a loan to set up a clothes shop. Instead he receives money elsewhere, and his shop is soon a success, a sign of the changing times during the following decades.
