Амбіційний журналіст Макс Брекетт, вимушений працювати на один з місцевих каліфорнійських телеканалів, мріє про сенсаційне матеріалі. Під час рутинного репортажу з музею природної історії він стає свідком конфлікту між директором установи місіс Бенкс і колишнім охоронцем Семом Бейлі, який бажає повернути свою роботу. Не в силах переконати директора словами, Сем дістає рушницю і починає загрожувати їй, що закінчується важким пораненням іншого охоронця і взяттям в заручники всіх, хто був в музеї (крім місіс Бенкс, це група дітей, які перебували на екскурсії).
