Місце дії серіалу - космічний корабель «Червоний карлик». Смертельний викид радіації вбиває на кораблі все живе, крім молодшого техніка Дейва Лістера, який перебував в сповільнювачі часу, і його вагітної кішки Франкенштейн, що знаходилася у вантажному відсіку.
